4 Benefits of Being a Freelance Writer – An Overview

freelance writerGuest post Friday – by freelance writer Victoria

There are a number of ways to make money online – foreign exchange, web questionnaires, and website creation are all popular.

But undoubtedly one of the most rewarding ways in which to make money online is by doing freelance writing work.

Freelance writing consists of writing content for websites, normally in the form of articles and blog posts, as well as a variety of other formats, including academic articles, scripts, re-writes, ebooks, and stories.

Essentially, you apply for jobs, or get recommended for them, do the work; you work for yourself. There are a number of benefits to being a freelance writer, and if you are looking for something to fill your time and bring in some extra money, then this could be the right option for you.

Work from home

A lot of people have to commute for hours to get to work, where they sit in a stuffy office listening to a tyrannical boss – it’s no wonder so many people get depressed by the rat race.

One of the biggest benefits of being a freelance writer is that you can work from anywhere. All that you need is a laptop and an internet connection and you are ready to go. This is ideal because you can work from your home, on the road, even at your favourite coffee shop.

You have the freedom to choose when and where you work, which is great if you have a family to take into consideration. Also, you can do this kind of work if you are laid low by sickness, or if you are looking to fill your time while working half day.

Flexible hours

A second great benefit of being a freelance writer is the fact that you have flexible hours. In most cases, you can choose to work as much or as little as you choose depending on your time and needs. Instead of waking up at the break of dawn, you can take your time and settle down to work when you choose to.

Obviously your work will be governed by deadlines, particularly if you are working as a freelance writer full time, but you still have unbelievable flexibility in terms of the time that you actually work. Once again, this is ideal when you have to balance your family, business, and all of the other little tasks of everyday life.

Make substantial money

Even though it may seem like you are not working flat out, you can make a substantial amount of money as a freelance writer, particularly if you live outside of the United States. When you start out you will be given a price by the prospective client, but as you build up a portfolio you will be allowed to state your price.

If you want to make a lot of money, you need to take the more advanced jobs (corporate or academic work pays best) and work to more strict deadlines. However, if you are just looking to supplement your income with a couple of hours of extra work on the side, then freelance writing is an ideal option.

Develop your writing

The biggest advantage of being a freelance writer is that you get to do something different and creative every single day. If you are considering writing for money then you obviously have an affinity for this most ancient of arts, and exploring that can be a real joy.

Each day is different – hopefully you will never have to write on the exact same topic twice! – and you can never be sure what to expect on any given day. You will find that your horizons expand with each new topic, as does your register and repertoire. Many young writers take this root to learn the ins and outs of writing from a working perspective, but even more developed writers can glean something useful from the entire process.

There are many benefits of becoming a freelance writer. It is a job that you can fall in love with without it taking over your life and becoming a chore. Learn, create, and profit from something that you absolutely love doing. It really couldn’t be better.

  • Work from home is the current trend. Although you have discussed very well. There are following benefits Flexibility of hours, Work load control, New skills, No office politics, No commute.

  • My biggest benefit? I know longer have to suffer through waiting to see if I can have time off to deal with issues surrounding my son. Every problem was doubled by the stress of having to deal with an unsympathetic boss. Now, I schedule appointments when it’s convenient for ME and schedule everything else around that.

  • I wish so much that I could write full-time, or even work part-time and write the rest of the day. The day job is often so exhausting I don’t have the energy to work when I get home.

You should have started with “It is a job that you can fall in love with without it taking over your life and becoming a chore.” 🙂 I think that that’s something that most people lack in their jobs and it’s so true about writing especially freelancing.

  • I’ve found all of these benefits (and more!) from working from home as a freelance writer and I wouldn’t change my profession for anything. If anything changes, it will be the amount of time I dedicate to this profession!

    • Yeah, my list of benefits is pretty long, including chuckling when I drive over the freeway on a surface street bridge and see the gridlock.

  • Great article! I agree that one of the greatest benefits is being able to work from anywhere. I have even written before while waiting in the parking lot for my wife to finish shopping. Being able to make some cash when I would otherwise be bored is truly a blessing.

    • lol, love the mental image of you in the parking lot writing away.
