30 Days of Writing Tips – Day 24 – Get Your Website Built

websites and blogs for freelance writersIf you don’t have a website or blog that markets you and your writing, you should. These days, in fact, you can hardly consider yourself in business if you don’t have a site.

Generally speaking, there are two reasons you must have your own website:

  • The biggest reason is that the web is where people who want to hire writers look. For example, I regularly get email or even phone calls from people looking for writers in my home town. Others find my as a ghostwriter because of the way they search. And a few even find me by searching on my name. I’d probably never make contact with these folks at all if I didn’t have a presence on the web as a freelance writer.

  • When you apply for a writing gig having a website gives you a way to show off your skills simply by providing a link to it. Sure, you may want to take a few samples if you have a face-to-face appointment. And yes, you’ll find editors who want have clips in their hands, although not many these days. But even when you find yourself showing off your physical  tear sheets and clips, the fact that you also have a website with more samples reassures potential clients that you are indeed a professional.

Here’s an additional hint: Getting even a simple site up with your own domain name is better than no site at all. And yes, using a template is just fine. Take a look at the post, 8 Must-Haves For Your Freelance Writing Site; it will act as a guide to getting yours done.

What’s been your experience with your own website?
