30 Days of Writing Tips – Day 15 – Ask For Referrals!

freelance writing marketingSure it’s obvious, which may be why it’s often overlooked. When you’ve finished a writing job, ask for referrals.

Sound brazen? Think about it – when was the last time you gave a referral?

The truth is we don’t think about giving them and we’re not that different than our clients – they don’t think about it either.

Freelance Folder has an excellent article called How to Ask for a Referral Without Sounding Like a Jerk. If you can find a gentle way to make your request less obvious do so.

On the other hand, the chances are, if you’ve done an outstanding job, your client would like to help you. People love to help, they really do. Don’t hesitate to simply ask, saying something like:

I’m glad you’re pleased. I’d be happy to contact any referrals you might want to give me, now or later.

When you get a referral be sure to say thanks, and if it results in a good gig send a handwritten thank you note or even a small thank you gift. Again, keep it simple – from the heart.
