30 Days of Writing Tips – Day 6 – Make Writing A Priority!

writing tipsBack in the day, Devon Ellington of Ink in My Coffee talked about the need to make writing your first priority if you want to become a professional freelance writer, saying, in part:

… You have to make a commitment and you have to stick to it.

There’s nothing wrong with writing only when you feel like it, but if you’re going to be a professional, you rely on your craft as much as on your art.

Devon is so very right. If you’re not committed to your writing the chances are you won’t write and market enough to become the professional freelance writer you say you want to become. And there’s absolutely no one who can do it for you.

That’s one of the reasons I offer the free ebook, The 3 Keys To Making Your Writing Pay. The short form is write, rewrite and market – that’s what it actually takes to make a living as a writer.

Jodi Cleghorn talks about both the need and a way of making writing your priority at Write Anything: Write More… Talk Less. Of her five tips I like “Treat Yourself (as a) Client” best – the others work well too. When I treat myself as a freelance writer the way I would a client, I almost automatically make my writing important.

We each have different reasons for wanting and needing to write, and different ways to get it done. It’s safe to say, however, that every successful writer made the writing a top priority.

What’s your favorite freelance writing tip?

  • I couldn’t agree more. Writing isn’t a fly-by-night fancy. Yes, sometimes it comes easily, but successful writing more often takes hard work, determination, and commitment.

I love it when other writers stress this fact because it looks so easy to people who don’t write – and especially to those who don’t write for a living.

Thanks for a great post and have an awesome day!
