Freelance Writers & The BIG Idea

freelance writing ideasDear Anne,

I have what I believe is a phenomenal idea for a book series for young adults. Seriously, I think this can become HUGE!

I’ve not written anything yet. Freelance writing is more of a dream than a reality for me so far. However, I have the whole idea and concept in my mind.

What do I need to do to move forward and make this happen?

How can I get an advance?

Do I need an agent?

Where do I start?

Thanks in advance,

Hi ClK,

Aren’t big ideas fun! As freelance writers we have unique opportunities to actually see them through to fruition.

I say this often, and I’ll say it again: nothing will happen until you get something written down. Freelance writers simply must get that idea down on paper, so start writing, in as much detail as you can.

If you discover as you write it’s not as clear as you thought it was, first, don’t be surprised. You need to be crystal clear. You can get clear by yourself. I offer a couple of articles that may help.

Or, if you don’t want to do it alone you want some coaching, I offer that as well. And there are other writing coaches out there.

Once you’re clear on your vision and purpose for your project your next step is probably a book proposal. There are lots of free resources on the ‘net and I offer an ebook that shows you exactly how to put one together.

Writers Market can help you find either a publisher or an agent. You can approach either, but not both. You can also search the ‘net for either in the appropriate category, in your case, young adult. Essentially, you choose wisely and submit your proposal and wait until you get a response from one or another or several.

If you know an agent or a publisher, or know someone who does, and you probably do, work that network. Many people never realize what kind of experts they know until they ask. When you can get a professional interested in your project you’re ahead of the game.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

How have you handled big ideas?

If you have a question, send an email with Q&A in the subject line and I’ll probably be able to answer it.

    • Big Ideas are my life! I’m always coming up with new ideas. I even bought a book specifically for them. How do I know which ones are good and which ones are unworthy? I try them out. That’s the only way I see in determining how far they can go. Great post Anne!

      • Yep, I told my mind to keep having ideas, good, bad, indifferent… some would be more than worth it.
