The 2 Secrets for Picking A Profitable Blog Topic

getting paidFreelance writers and others often ask me questions about blogging and one of the biggest questions they have is about picking a blog topic. Usually what they really want to know is how to pick a subject that will make money.

Making money with a blog is a worthy endeavor, particularly for writers.  For someone who is at ease putting words on paper or screen, blogging is a natural.

When it comes to picking a profitable blog topic there are only two secrets – but one is way more important than the other.

The 2 Secrets to Profitable Blog Subjects

The two secrets to a money making blog topic are:

  1. Your own interest in the blog topic.
  2. The market for that blog topic.

Look at them one at a time and you’ll see what I mean.

Your Interest In The Blog Topic

If you’re going to create your own profitable blog you simply have got to have a blazing interest in the topic you choose. If you don’t have the passion, and one that lasts, you won’t be able to sustain the effort to make your blog profitable.

Here’s what I mean.

I’m passionate about writing and I love sharing what I know about freelance writing. I’ve been able to sustain this blog in one form or another for well over a decade.  On the other hand, I started dollarsanddebt.com (no link because it’s broken) thinking I could keep writing about what it takes to get out of debt, stay out of debt and stop underearning. Although I suspect someone could make that work it turned out not to be me. (Anyone want to buy the domain name?)

As it happens I know a few of the bloggers that earn serious money, like Darren Rowse of problogger.net Brian Clark who founded CopyBlogger.com and Liz Strauss of Successful Blog. Each one in a highly individualistic way is passionate about their topic. I could list more and what each has in common with the other is a love for what they blog about and a strong desire, even need, to share that information with others.

The lesson is clear – you’ve got to choose a subject that you can live with and enjoy over the long haul. Being interested in your topic is by far more important than anything else.

The Market For The Topic

The second secret is the market for your topic. But wait! There is a market for any topic you can dream up.

Sure, some are bigger than others. That doesn’t really matter. If you’re interested in left handed tabby cats there are thousands of others out there that are also interested.

While it’s worth doing some investigation about the topic of your choice, it’s more to refine your subject and locate other bloggers in the same arena than to figure out if there is a market. You can assume there is.

Are some topics better money makers than others? Sure, at least in theory. For example, weight loss looks like it has way more potential viewers and advertisers than freelance writing, yet I can find dozens of abandoned and almost abandoned blogs about weight loss that never reached their potential or made as much money as this blog does.

Google and the other search engines are getting smarter about pointing to real sites rather than the scamy sites which is good news for you and the niche you choose.

  • I think the question of looking at whether you have a profitable topic is an important one. It’ll be a lot easier to make money if it’s a topic with a bigger audience than if it’s teeny-tiny. That said, there are definitely some subcultures that are fanatical about their lifestyle and might support a blog well even though their numbers are smaller — I’m thinking of tattoos, which I gather are a great topic for blog monetizing!

And the smaller niche sometimes offers the possibility of long-tail profitability.

  • Can you give me some ideas about what that covers? I’ve been blogging for a while and know about companies that sponsor posts written on and including links to their products, about google adsense, and affiliate links to amazon.com and the like. You got more than that? 🙂

Well, we’ve got a webinar about that… the money making side of blogging 😉

  • I definitely agree with finding something you love to write about. It’s very hard to write regularly on a topic you don’t love, especially when it takes a long time and lots of dedication in order to make money. Ask me how much money my blog has made since I started it in October. Good thing I love it! LOL!
