Favorite Women Authors

Today is International Woman’s Day 2011.

Some will undoubtedly question why we should have such a day. Most women understand without thinking about it much. And all you need to do is compare pay scales here in the United States and elsewhere to realize we are still a long way from equality. I’ve never understood why women are paid less and why we so often seem to be feared or hated or thought less than men.

But I digress!

Some of my favorite women writers include:

Lori Widmer – Just love the way she tells it like it is. And she’s always got my back.

Carol Tice – Another straight shooter, and fun to teach with.

Jenn Mattern – She always knows who she is and what she wants to say.

Cathy Miller – another friend and writer who knows what its all about.

Deb Ng – A leader in the blogasphere and a good friend.

Helen Chang – Good writer, good friend.

Lauri S. Friedman – Good writer, good friend.

Allena Tapia – the freelance writing guide at about who does such an excellent job.

I am proud to know these women. Each of them makes the world a better place because they are in it, and make my world better by far. Each has a writing ability to envy and to learn from.

Now, who are some of your favorite women writers?

  • Well, all of you ladies of course! 🙂 I really enjoy your blog posts and they are so helpful.

Since I write fiction, I have to think of some fiction authors. Toni Morrison, of course. And my mind is a blank! Most commercial fiction I read is written by men. OH, Harper Lee, Betty Smith, both authors of two of my favorite books. And Carson McCullers.

  • Lauri

    You’re sweet 🙂

  • Anne, that is a great list. I love Deb Ng’s writing style. I also love your writing style. There are so many other women writer’s to add to my list, but I will just mention two authors whose writings have influenced me. When it comes to journalists, I like Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor of The Nation. One of my all time favorite author’s is the late, great Katherine Anne Porter. I remember reading her short stories and short novels when I was 19 or 20. Her character’s were so vivid that I didn’t want to stop reading.

  • Great list, Anne, and many of them would be on mine, too. I’d also add Dana Prince, Cathy Miller, Lisbeth Tanz, Laura Spencer, Ileane Smith, Danielle McGaw, Rebecca Leaman and you, of course. 🙂 Yours was one of the first blogs I started reading when I started freelancing, and I keep coming back.

    • Sharon, thanks so much – it’s an honour to be listed in such great company – some of my favourites, and a few smart women here I’m pleased to ‘meet’ for the first time, too! 🙂

  • PS-I didn’t answer your question-I share many of your list-and, of course, I would have to add your name-and not just because you named me – really. When I 1st started freelancing, I was fortunate to find you, and I never left.

I also love the writing that Brandi-Ann Uyemura does. She is so positive and inspiring. And Sharon Hurley Hall has that generous spirit that is so typical amongst our freelance writers.

I feel like I’m accepting an Oscar and am going to forget an important person-so shout-out to all the great women writers-I hope you know & believe who you are! 🙂

  • Aww, thanks, Anne. I just saw (thanks to Google) that it was International Woman’s Day 2011. I thought, Darn, I have to do a post on that. Perhaps at my personal blog. Great minds. 🙂

It is mind-boggling that women still get paid less here – for doing the same job. But, many of us here in the USA don’t truly understand how much worse women are treated in other countries.

Thank you so much for the shout-out. I’m honored to be on such a great list.
