Happy Birthday America

by Anne Wayman

The Declaration of IndendenceThe United States considers July 4th as it’s birthday because it was on this day in 1776 that the Continental Congress announced that our 13 colonies were independent from England.

The words were written in June of that year by Thomas Jefferson, and when we US citizens are paying attention, inform us and our government even today.

Every year National Public Radio has a series of reporters and others read the Declaration of Independence out loud. It’s a lovely thing to hear.

If you’d like to read along, you can do so here.

And to all us Americans, Happy 4th of July
