Another of my favorite writing tips is bookending.
It’s simple to do:
Call a supportive friend and tell them you’re going to work on X for X amount of time. Or tell them you’re going to write X number of words.
Or tell them you’re going to spend X amount of time straightening up your desk. This technique or trick can work for most anything.
- Do the promised writing.
- Call back and report that you completed the amount of writing you assigned yourself. If, as sometimes happens, you don’t do what you said you would do, report that too.
Bookending works particularly well when you’ve got a freelance writing project that is either difficult or that, for one reason or another, you simply don’t want to do.
I think it works because you’re creating some accountability for yourself. Accountability somehow helps with the discipline, the persistence that is so necessary for the successful freelancer.
What tricks do you have to get the writing done?
