Oh I agree hugely. I have Vonnegut’s advice on my wall and number six is:
Be a Sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them—in order that the reader may see what they are made of.
No-one wants to read stories where people are happy happy through the book. Doesn’t mean they literally have to be in a concentration camp, but a mother’s anguish over her son’s bullying, or a man losing his job and feeling he’s lost his purpose, can be just as telling.
