On the whole I’m grateful. One of the reasons my phone has been driving my crazy is because of new clients.
Today even the doorbell rang! That’s unusual in my home office. It was a client who was delivering a check that had gotten lost in the mail. I love those kinds of clients. But I digress.
Even though, however, it’s mostly good news, it’s also been one heck of a distraction. It’s only 10 a.m. and it’s obvious I’m going to hard pushed to make even a small dent in my to do list.
I realized I was starting to feel frantic so this is what I did:
- Fixed a cup of tea – just leaving the computer for the kitchen helped me take a break.
- Check my calendar / to do list to see what’s really due today.
- Triage that list to make sure I know what’s important and not just urgent.
Today it means only two things other than this post: read a client’s notes / edits for today’s phone meeting and be sure I’ve got all the information I can for my appointment with my tax guy.
As I get those done I’ll pick and choose through the rest of the list.
For me, the most important fact is that I have a list.
Actually I have a comprehensive to do list that’s part of my calendar and goals. I use Success Studio’s GoalPro, but any system that helps you keep track of both today, this week, this month and this year works well.
I’m not vague about what I need to do, or more accurately, I have a way to quickly get out of vagueness so I don’t just do what I prefer, but actually get done what I need to get done.
Another thing, though, is bothering me at the moment. That’s the fact that I have too much to do.
I can’t solve that today, but sometime soon, maybe even this weekend, I need to take a close look at my schedule and what I really want. Adjustments can always be made.
What do you do when you’ve got too much to do?
