Nobody Cares – Videos For Writers

in Videos About Writing

Author Dennis Lehane talks about you as a writer. And yes, it is over after the end credits… not sure why it seems to run on.

What do you think?

Write well and often,

Anne

One of the better videos on writing. Succinct, personal, pithy.

I saw a play with a friend about 2 years ago. (“First Love,” if you’re curious.) It was off-the-wall strange, with a few Anglo-Saxon words thrown in. My friend was shocked and (maybe) a bit embarrassed that she’d dragged me to see it. I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was clear that the author DIDN’T CARE if anybody was offended by the character’s language. It was what it was–the character speaking with a particular voice. What I took away from it was: Don’t censor yourself. When you write, say what you have to say, the way you have to say it. F’EITCTAJ. Let it all hang out. You can always go back later and tone it down, if you want. Nobody will care, probably, one way or the other. Just write.

It blows me away how few people even know what I’m doing, let alone care.

This is great advice. I have a very loud internal editor voice, being a perfectionist and all. It’s good to be reminded that first of all, writing should be about the pleasure of doing it. And also that there’s no real pressure and things can always be thrown out, changed, rewritten or stashed away. Thanks for posting Anne!
