Aïda Rogers, Editor. All editorial submissions. “Sandlapper is a quarterly magazine about South Carolina’s people, places, history and culture. We have columns about South Carolina books/authors, restaurants, and cooking. We run articles about towns, interesting people, arts, quirks, fun things to do. Because we’re quarterly, we can’t be really ‘newsy’ but more seasonal. We don’t run articles about controversial topics.” 80% freelance. Circ. 10K. Quarterly. Pays about one month after publication. Buys first-time and electronic rights and the right to publish in Sandlapper databases. Responds in 1-3 weeks. “Sample copy available by writing or emailing us. There will be a shipping charge and cost for a copy.” Subscription $25. “If the subscriber is military overseas, it’s $25 (they have to provide an APO address). Cost for other overseas subscriptions depends on the location.” Guidelines by email, or by mail with SASE. CURRENT NEEDS: “Humor, action, and a strong sense of South Carolina. Our best writers live here and understand this state.” Pays $100 per published page, copy and photo/s combined. Stories run 500 words to 2500 words. If you are new to us, send a query with 2 published clips. Email is fine; snail-mail with SASE is fine.” PHOTOS/ART: “Digital at a minimum of 300 dpi. We will also work with photo prints.” Pays $100 per published page (and $50 for half-page). HINTS: “Because Sandlapper is so geographically specific, it’s really best for writers to either live here or to have lived here before. Writers who vacationed on Hilton Head or in Charleston and Myrtle Beach and want to write loosely about what they did and saw are wasting their time with us (we can spot a tourist, and that doesn’t serve our purposes). A common mistake out-of-state writers make is to target us for generic southern, and to send us generic articles about grits or cornbread or the boll weevil. If a writer is going to tackle these subjects for us, he or she will need to consult South Carolina experts and quote South Carolinians to make it work for Sandlapper. It really helps for the writer to be familiar with us before he or she queries. It’s rather insulting to the editor when a writer suggests a story on something we covered in the last few years. Something new we’ve started is a series titled “My Kind of Place,” in which a South Carolina writer describes his favorite place in the state. So far we’ve covered an old cemetery on Daufuskie Island and a music club in Greenville. We’ve had a huge response from writers who want to participate, and I don’t foresee us running out of topics in the next several years. Read the magazine before you query. Get a sense of the kinds of things we cover.”

Pays on publication. Publishes manuscript 1-3 months after acceptance. Occasionally accepts reprints. Responds 30 to 90 days. Sample by email, mail or online. Subscription $15. PHOTOS/ART: “Prefer digital at 200 dpi. Quality photos are essential.” HINTS: “Strong regional focus. Common mistakes include submitting stories too long, inappropriate content, or too far out of our region. Looking for destination stories with specifics of where to go and what to do; leisure and recreation. No ‘how-tos’, no first person. Let us know your specific area of interest and experience. Don’t say, ‘I can write anything about anywhere.’”

Thanks, Anne! Hope your new year is off to a great start!
so far, it’s excellent… same back at you.
Hi Anne, my name is Hulbert. I am just a random person on the web that writes a self-help blog. I’ve never done freelancing before and I’ve decided that it’s something that I want to get into. I’ve been researching it for hours, but a lot of what’s out there on the internet about the freelancing world is just hard to understand for me; there’s just so much convoluted stuff out there.
Somehow I stumbled across this nice blog and I was wondering if you can help me out and point me to the right direction. Maybe I can email you or you can email me and I can ask you a couple of questions about freelancing and what it’s like if that’s okay with you.
Hulbert, I do answer questions from readers on this blog – email them to me one per email; just make sure you put Q&A in the subject line or I’ll lose you to spam.
Thanks, Anne for these postings! I eagerly wait for them:) Wish you a blessed new year!
