Matthews, Publisher; Jerlene Rose, Editor. 50% freelance. “We are all about Kentucky and what is good – its history, beautiful scenery, and the remarkable spirit of its wonderful and friendly people. ALL pieces/features/photos MUST have a Kentucky connection. We have high appeal to displaced Kentuckians – those who live outside their home county, or native Kentuckians living outside the state.” Enthusiastically welcomes emerging writers. Readership 150K. 4 issues/year. Pays on publication. Publishes ms 1-6 months after acceptance. Buys FNASR. No reprints. Responds 3 months. Sample copy for $5.00 plus $2.41 for SASE. Subscription $20. Writer/Photographer Guidelines online at http://www.backhomeinky.com/guidelines.html.
CURRENT NEEDS: “Topic/subject must be about Kentucky places, people, upcoming events, products, etc. Remember that we publish bi-monthly. If an event you want to write about is coming up, be sure we get it in time to run it before the event so people can plan to attend.” Pays $50-$100 for articles; $100-$200 for feature piece or cover photo. Max length 3000 words. Submit by e-mail (Microsoft Word doc); include U.S. Postal mailing address & phone number as well as email address. PHOTOS/ART: Color digital photos – 300 dpi minimum; pdf or tiff format. Pays flat fee of $25 inside; $50-$100 for photo feature. HINTS: “We do not accept how-to articles on babysitting, catching a mate, eating healthy, etc. No religion or politics. Our regular feature categories are: Kentucky History; Kentucky Treasure (usually a little-known location, historic site, etc.); Destination: a
feature-length piece on a location that has lots to offer visitors and residents; Field Trip (shorter article on appealing location, usually not as well known); Natural History (wildlife); Bookshelf (review of books about Kentucky subjects or by KY authors); In the Kitchen (features Kentucky cookbooks/recipes).” - Blue Mountain Arts, Inc – Attn: Editorial Department, P.O. Box 1007, Boulder, CO 80306. Email: editorial-at-sps.com. Website: http://www.sps.com. All submissions should be addressed to “Editorial Department.” “Blue Mountain Arts has published greeting cards and gift books for over 35 years. The majority of our products have uplifting messages with a positive theme. Our greeting cards are known for bringing people together with heartfelt messages and sentiments.” Welcomes new writers. Pays on acceptance. Period between acceptance and publication varies depending on the product, but is usually within “a few months.” Buys “exclusive rights for all greeting cards. If a work is used only in an anthology, the writer keeps the copyright.” No reprints. Responds 2-4 months. “”Our greeting cards and books are widely available at gift stores and bookshops around the country. Our books can also be purchased online at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.” Guidelines online at http://www.sps.com/greetingcards/index.htm, by email, or by mail with SASE. CURRENT NEEDS: “We are looking for highly original greeting card submissions. We are also accepting book proposals in non-fiction areas such as self-help, family, relationships, positive living, etc.” Pays $300 for greeting cards, $50 if a piece is used only in an anthology. Payment for book proposals is negotiable. “Greeting card submissions should be typewritten, one poem per page, and your name should appear on each page. You must enclose a SASE if you would like a response. Email submissions should be sent as the text of the email, not as attachments. If submitting several poems by email, please send them all in one email. See poetry contest guidelines at http://www.sps.com/k/poetry/contest.htm. Book proposals should include an overview of the book, a biography of the author, and at least a few chapters of the book. We do not accept book proposals by email.” PHOTOS/ART: “We do not accept freelance artwork or photography.” HINTS: “Please take note that the majority of the material we publish does not rhyme. Don’t be too specific when writing greeting cards, as it will limit the audience. Try to add original details that make a card sound unique, yet are universally shared. It can often help to have someone in mind when writing (a friend, relative, etc.). Become familiar with our products, but then try to submit something that is different from them in some way. We are focusing on finding new voices and new, creative ways of writing and expressing emotion.”
- Central Florida Doctor - 13500 Sutton Park Drive South, Suite 105, Jacksonville, FL 32224. P(904)992-9945. F(904)992-9907. Email: editor-at-beson4.com. Website:http://www.beson4media.com. Dawn Josephson, Editor. “Central Florida Doctor is a monthly business and lifestyle magazine for physicians in the Central Florida market. Our purpose is to recognize local physicians who have accomplished something noteworthy or who have interesting hobbies or lifestyles, while giving readers news they can use in running their practices or supporting the medical community. The flavor of the magazine is decidedly local, with multiple photos accompanying each article. Writing style is friendly, but with liberal use of medical terms and advanced vocabulary.” 100% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 7K. Monthly. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms 1-3 months. CURRENT NEEDS: *Medical business – running a medical practice, employee/practice management, marketing a medical practice, etc.; *Interview/profile (of local physicians) – profiles are more about the person rather than the doctor. We want to know about the unique things doctors do in their spare time. The purpose of a profile is for a reader to finish reading the piece and say, ‘Hmmm. I never knew that about Dr. Smith.’; *Political issues affecting physicians; *Local medical community news; *Travel; *Luxury living.” Pays $0.11/word for 1500-2000 words. Submit query by email or phone. PHOTOS/ART: “Several print-quality photos are needed for profiles. JPEG, TIFF, GIF. Minimum 300 dpi resolution at print size. We arrange any cover shoots.” HINTS: “This is a local magazine for local doctors. Every article, even a business-oriented one, must contain some local sources. Profile pieces must not be solely about the person’s profession. They are to show interesting things about the subjectói.e. maybe the doctor has an unusual collection of rare yo-yos, perhaps she is a fencing champion, or maybe he is an award winning organic gardener. We want the story behind the story.

Hi Anne, great list as always. Just wanted to drop you a note and tell you that I got a position you had listed back on December 7. It’s for a football blogger ~ lower paying, but I think it will be a great thing for a little extra income. I just got the acceptance email today.
Happy holidays!
Beth V.
Thanks for the heads up.
