Unfortunately the one big legal Web site I did a ton of work for I think is no longer at that rate, they went lower. But in general, any area of technical expertise there’s still plenty of $.50-$1 a word work out there. You need to target major corporations or well-funded startups, and companies that are trying to establish themselves as thought leaders. B2B also generally pays better than B2C, which I think many people stay stuck in. If you can explain surety bonds or employee benefits or software features or whatever to a sophisticated audience of pension fund managers or developers or whoever, that’s something companies have to pay well for, because there aren’t that many writers who excel at doing this in a compelling and accessible way.

I’m a professional writer with tons of experience looking to make a little extra cash where I can find it. What I find even more amazing than the radically under-priced gigs is the fact that so many people appear willing to snap them up at a moment’s notice. It is really frustrating. Do you mind sharing the name of the place that pays $.50 per word? Thanks

No. 7 is quite susupicious as I have never heard of anyone who would want an editor , saying: “No professional expertise is required of the editor.” Sounds like a phony ad if no “expertise” is “required.” Either that or perhaps they think they can pay someone close to nothing and get the job done. Don’t know, but my radar says stay away — could also be a scam.

I’m just loving #50…they need special expertise and only superstar writers should apply…to get paid $20 an article! Best of luck to them. I get $.50 a word and up for my legal-expertise writing. May the recession end soon and the desperate souls who take these radically underpriced gigs find full time work soon, allowing rates to return to sanity.
