A Nerd Looks At NaNoMo – Videos About Writers

in Videos About Writing

It’s a fun, wacky video with some surprisingly good advice about novel writing in general.

Write well and often,

Funny guy. The core idea: NaNoWriMo gives us permission to suck. But reading a crappy novel (or as much of it as you can stand) also gives us permission. And inspiration of a sort. As does attending an awful play. I saw a play once that was so bad, I thought Geesh, that’s the worst thing I ever saw. I couldn’t possibly write anything worse. I think I’ll just go ahead and write that play I’ve been thinking about for a long time. So I did. Last year, I saw another play (“First Love”) that I enjoyed but my friend was distressed by. I enjoyed it because it gave me license to write over-the-top, don’t-give-a-damn dialogue. Seeing those two plays freed up my writing a lot more than NaNu-NaNu-WriMo ever could.

On the other hand, my friend’s daughter is now doing a NaNoWriMo m/s. She’s over a fourth of the way done, and I’m very impressed by her discipline in getting this far. If she completes the task, I think this will have a lasting effect on her life.
