Developed for kids 4-14, this new e-publication brings a whole new twist to exploring Pacific Northwest history. COLUMBIAKids features amazing people, places, and objects from the Pacific Northwest’s past. With exciting stories and special departments such as ‘One Day in History,’ ‘Homework Helper,’ and ‘Northwest Hotspot,’ ColumbiaKids is not only a great read for children, it is a fabulous resource for teachers who want to integrate reading, writing, and Pacific Northwest history.” 70-80% freelance. Writers and illustrators guidelines online at http://columbia.washingtonhistory.org/kids/Spring2009/aboutcolumbiakids.aspx
CURRENT NEEDS: “We need writers who can write about Pacific Northwest history in fun and exciting ways that will engage children. Our specific features and departments are outlined in our guidelines. All of the features and departments are nonfiction, with the exception of ‘One Day in History’ which is an historical fiction short.” Pays $25-$200, depending on the department or feature for 200-1200 words. “Specific amounts are detailed in our guidelines. Email queries are okay. Submit complete manuscript by mail with SASE, including author background and at least 5 story reference sources. Historical accuracy is critical, so authors must be able to back up their work.”
PHOTOS/ART: “We are very excited to now feature a different illustrator for each issue. To be considered, illustrators should send us a set of samples or a web page link to their online portfolio. Photographers are welcome to contact us as well since we often need quality photos to accompany articles.” Pay rate varies.
HINTS: “All of our stories have to have a Pacific Northwest tie. The one mistake writers make is submitting a piece that is too ‘generic’ for our purposes. Our goal is to help kids in the Pacific Northwest-as well as kids in other parts of the country and world-make connections with the people, places, and events of Pacific Northwest history.”
