One Writer’s Process, One Time – Videos About Writing

in Getting Started & Getting It Done,Videos About Writing

Ever had trouble getting started on writing a piece?  Tony Daylor’s husband tracked what she actually did when she was trying to get an article started. I seriously doubt if everything Tony writes is like this, although I do recognize what I call endless pencil sharpening. So why publish this one? So you’ll know you’re not alone!

Incidentally I suspect her statements about how she usually gets writing done is absolutely true.

Would you let someone document how you actually write? I’m not sure I would.

Write well and often,

Anne

This was great video! And you were exactly right on in your idea to make me know I’m not alone. Thanks so much for sharing it!

Funny! My husband always says I could write twice as much if I didn’t always find ways to “prolong the process,” but he’s wrong – the process is how I get through the writing. They say each of us is given a gift – I just wish mine were easier to execute. I have sisters gifted in math and science and it just seems their process is so much easier and the results more gratifying. When they do an experiment, they know (most of the time) if it was successful or not and why. With writing, I feel I am always second guessing – should I have written it this way? And, since they both are in labs, no one ever questions if they are just “goofing off” as the work.

Tammy, I’ll bet if you work at it a tiny bit at a time you can come to trust yourself more about what you write… that takes practice, but I no longer, usually, spend much time sharpening pencils the way I used to… sure writing can always be improved, but often it doesn’t need to be. See what I mean?

Thanks for sharing. I feel like I’m spinning my wheels so much of the time. Glad to know that others go through some of the same things.

So funny! I often have a hard time getting started and will hang out in my Google Reader, visit blogs, grab drinks, etc. before being able to actually WRITE.
