If you missed this Wednesday, her it is again:

An independent project in support of an alternative rap/crossover album is looking for the right people to make it all happen.  Creativity, writing skills, experience with dark, gritty fiction and a collaborative frame of mind are needed.

The project theme is the seven deadly sins, and the music side of it is underway — using hip hop beats in surprising combination with other elements!  The task that needs doing now is creating a fictional character, a persona/alter ego for the performer.  This anti-hero character will be used to perform and promote the music, and be a visual connection to the project.

To begin with, a short story is needed, to give depth and dimension to the character and music.  At the same time, the project’s creator hopes, in the future, to move into an expanded universe for this character with graphic novels and/or animated films.

Parts of the short story will probably be published first online, in installments, to create interest prior to the CD release. With the release of the CD, it will undoubtedly be available in a printed form, and perhaps a comic book format could be a logical step here.

The setting will be fictional, a ‘universal’ sin city (think more Gotham than Las Vegas), so there will be some need to establish the sense of place as well as the characters.  One of the keys to our protagonist is that he is not ghetto — he is middle-class, mid-twenties, plays with fire and goes too far . . . loses the one person he loves and realizes that he is responsible.  The project (CD/story/etc) is exploring the idea that it is a fine line between controlling our vices and our vices controlling us.  Quite possibly the going too far enmeshes him in some sort of conspiracy (”good guys” aren’t to be trusted?) and he is trying to warn others not to follow his path, and gain forgiveness/peace.

Of course there are as many ways to tell such a story as there are creative brains out there . . . so if this starts your brain to buzzing, here’s what we’d like from you:

~ an email to Marty — em_cee@gmx.ch (cc: zebraxing@zografis.com) telling briefly why you’d be interested in the project and what experience you have that is relevant.

~ attach ONE short (~500 words) writing sample in the genre (previously published or not, but please only in this genre, excerpts are fine) or point to one online.

~ an idea of how much time you have to devote to the project in the next 3 months

~ your fee for a roughly 6500-word story (payments to be made via PayPal)

~ if you have prior experience with graphic novels or animated features, please include that info (ditto if you are a marketing genius)

Marty has already compiled a lot of research about the seven deadly sins and their possible permutations in the modern world as preparation for the album, this research will be made available to the writer chosen for the project, as will the existing notes on the anti-hero character.

One final note: while an interest in hip hop music could be helpful, it is by no means required — strong, gritty noir sensibilities (with a devious, slightly larger-than-life aspect) are what we need from you.

Canadian writing job seekers may find what they want at the Canadian Freelance Writing Jobs Blog. Deb Ng publishes jobs at Freelance WritingGigsas does Jennifer Mattern at All Freelance Writing.

Write well and often,

Anne
