Low Paying Gigs

  1. Writers for Tween Magazine

Might Be Worth Considering:

  1. Writing internship w/ stipend
  2. Producer and Proposal Writer
  3. Screenwriter wanted for independent feature film

One last time:

An independent project in support of an alternative rap/crossover album is looking for the right people to make it all happen.  Creativity, writing skills, experience with dark, gritty fiction and a collaborative frame of mind are needed.

The project theme is the seven deadly sins, and the music side of it is underway — using hip hop beats in surprising combination with other elements!  The task that needs doing now is creating a fictional character, a persona/alter ego for the performer.  This anti-hero character will be used to perform and promote the music, and be a visual connection to the project.

To begin with, a short story is needed, to give depth and dimension to the character and music.  At the same time, the project’s creator hopes, in the future, to move into an expanded universe for this character with graphic novels and/or animated films.

Parts of the short story will probably be published first online, in installments, to create interest prior to the CD release. With the release of the CD, it will undoubtedly be available in a printed form, and perhaps a comic book format could be a logical step here.

The setting will be fictional, a ‘universal’ sin city (think more Gotham than Las Vegas), so there will be some need to establish the sense of place as well as the characters.  One of the keys to our protagonist is that he is not ghetto — he is middle-class, mid-twenties, plays with fire and goes too far . . . loses the one person he loves and realizes that he is responsible.  The project (CD/story/etc) is exploring the idea that it is a fine line between controlling our vices and our vices controlling us.  Quite possibly the going too far enmeshes him in some sort of conspiracy (”good guys” aren’t to be trusted?) and he is trying to warn others not to follow his path, and gain forgiveness/peace.

Of course there are as many ways to tell such a story as there are creative brains out there . . . so if this starts your brain to buzzing, here’s what we’d like from you:

~ an email to Marty — em_cee@gmx.ch (cc: zebraxing@zografis.com) telling briefly why you’d be interested in the project and what experience you have that is relevant.

~ attach ONE short (~500 words) writing sample in the genre (previously published or not, but please only in this genre, excerpts are fine) or point to one online.

~ an idea of how much time you have to devote to the project in the next 3 months

~ your fee for a roughly 6500-word story (payments to be made via PayPal)

~ if you have prior experience with graphic novels or animated features, please include that info (ditto if you are a marketing genius)

Marty has already compiled a lot of research about the seven deadly sins and their possible permutations in the modern world as preparation for the album, this research will be made available to the writer chosen for the project, as will the existing notes on the anti-hero character.

One final note: while an interest in hip hop music could be helpful, it is by no means required — strong, gritty noir sensibilities (with a devious, slightly larger-than-life aspect) are what we need from you.

Canadian writing job seekers may find what they want at the Canadian Freelance Writing Jobs Blog. Deb Ng publishes jobs at Freelance WritingGigs as does Jennifer Mattern at All Freelance Writing.

Write well and often,

Anne

LOL!! We have all seen proof of “you get what you pay for.” ($5.50-$7/article+10% of pay=per-click revenues). Here’s another example. I have 30+ years of experience in health care & insurance so I thought I would check out the web site http://insurance-toolbox.com shown in Job #24. Here is a portion of the 1st article:
=====
Life insurance cover is a sensible purchase …. Here’s how to bring down the cost of your cover and secure peace of mind on the cheap.
Be choosy
…. There are plenty of companies out there who are keen to sell you their life insurance policies. Instead of singing up to the first good deal you see, spend some time comparing offers
====
That’s what I did wrong all those years! I was trying to service “coverage” instead of “cover” and I was “signing” people up instead of “signging” about the “cover”. I guess that’s what they call “blanket” insurance. :-)

lol back – typos allowed here, as long as you laugh at yourself. ;)

okay, that’s what I get for being a smart aleck! I had a typo in trying to type their typo/misspelling–they said “singing” instead of “signing” & my typo showed “signging”===Big LOL–God is telling me to be kind. :-)

Just to save everyone else from wasting there time, don’t bother reading the “Fashion, Style, Beauty & Relationship Writers!” , it eventually and finally states that you need to send an original article for them to publish and you will not be compensated for it. Oh, but maybe if they like your writing they may pay you for more. Am I getting too darn cynical (which is always possible) or do I smell a scam?

Aysha, no, you’re not too cynical… one approach is to send them a sample of something you’ve already written and been paid for… with a note stating your fees for original work… if only everyone would do that! Thanks for posting.

Reminds me of an ad I answered for writers to deliver articles on insurance (in an earlier post I mentioned I have 30+ years of experience in insurance) and they came back to tell me this was a gig with no pay– just the opportunity to build my creditability. I guess 30+ years of professional writing with a specialty in insurance wasn’t enough.:-) :-) :-)

total bs of course Cathy… there are legit jobs for insurance writing… sure wish I knew how to sort these out without applying for every single job… and even if I did you’d get the info way late.

Yeah, I get very annoyed with the ones asking people to work for free. Honestly, I’ve never worked for free, even starting out. I might have worked for pennies per word, but I realized there were so many paying gigs out there that there was no reason to work for free. I’d rather be able to pay at least a credit card bill with a few articles than waste my time making money for someone else for free.
