Thanks as always, Anne, for these postings.

That one editing job in L.A. requires an M.F.A. No disrespect to those folks, but I have 20 years of real-world editing experience and I’d put that up against somebody with a master’s any day of the week!

Lisa, hiring managers are at least as nervous about finding the right candidate as candidates are about finding a decent gig. Requiring an MFA is just a sorting method really. If you think you can do it, apply anyway – you might be pleasantly surprised. I’ve often been hired and there’s nothing about education on any resume or credit list. Once and awhile someone will ask… I either laugh and say something about the school of the real world. One person I know was able to carry off the statement that he’d been ‘privately educated.’ He told me I was one of the few that ever got the fact he didn’t have a degree.

Good luck.

Lisa, the MFA “requirement” (#34) is either overkill OR they want you to be able to spot errors of fact in art content (“Here we have a detail from ‘The Gleaners,’ by Jean-François Mullet…”) Either way, go for it–what do you have to lose? Okay, so it looks like a Cuisinart/pasteup job, anyway, but let us know what you find out.

Anne: Opening 17 (“Critique my website”) doesn’t seem to have any firm pay associated with it: “Compensation: depends on value of suggestions.” There’s no way to know if you’d ever get paid or how much. Seems like a Low Pay listing, at best, since there’s only a page to review.

Another thought with the mfa – they may want to be able to say “well we hired someone with a degree…”

Jorge, re Critique my website… hard to know about this one and lots of them if you really think about it. I either wouldn’t answer that ad or I’d make a bid type answer you know, X an hour or a flat fee of… so many of these it’s a guess until someone negotiates with them. But you’re right, it might belong in low pay… unless… ;)

Thanks for the suggestions, Anne! I applied for it and I’ll keep you posted.

Jorge, I figured the “Critique my Web site” guy was not worth it, based on him saying that his layout is “set in stone.” Uh, nothing on the Web is. That’s the beauty of it. :)

Hey Anne.I’ve been receiving your posts daily, updating me on the latest writing jobs.I am a Kenyan University student, and I am taking a Bachelors degree in Communication and Media Technology, though I have a bias for thge print media.I love writing…its a passion I’ve nurtured since I was young. It’s however unfortunate that most of the writing updates you send, the employers would rather have people based in the US.Please Anne,is trhere any way you can help me exploit my writing talent,.as I hone my skills and up my prowess, while still make some money to push me through college?
