TPTB (The Powers That Be) have finally announced we’re in a recession. What took ‘em so long is what I want to know. Be that as it may, many freelance writers have bought into the fear around economic bad times.
An approach that works better for me than fear is faith. I find meditation and prayer helps me remember the true Source of my income and let’s me work toward being of maximum service to my clients and others.
Here are some blogs that help me ground when I’m in fear. Plus, they offer some really practical advice:
- Out of the Blog, Into the Light – Catherine Franz has a ton of ways to promote your blog, your writing and you’re self.
- Lori Widmar has a practical article called More Cash Cows which has abundant links to other good resources.
- The Wealthy Freelancer asks: Do You Live in a World of Abundance or Scarcity?
- Liz Straus tells us: What I Remembered after a Rocky Day
- Peter Bowerman has a guest article called: Why 2008 Has Been a Good Year For Me, and How Every Year Can Be Good For You… – read it closely, it’s about starting a conversation with potential clients.
Two newsletters:
Abundant Freelance Writing – a resource for freelance writers including 3x a week job postings.
Writing With Vision – for those who want to get a book written.

I am in complete agreement with you on this, Anne. I think panicking is the absolute worse thing freelancers can do. Remaining steadfast in faith can do wonders. Ironically it will free up clients for those who stick with it.

Fear of financial melt down. Bugger that. It’s more like a comedy. The stock market has become just another gambling venue for people with more money than brains.
No mortgage, no credit cards, no worries mate.
Thanks Kimberly. And George, I’m closer to you than you might think
Excellent post/link to get me thinking.
Fear?
*Nibbles nails looks nervously around.*
I think I have to let go of fear of marketing myself properly.
I hate rejection and don’t want to be too aggressive but do want to be successful.
I guess I should read some articles or books on letting go of fear.
Thanks Anne.

To quote FDR: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” That’s extremely profound because fear is paramount among the negative emotions. If we dwell on it, we become even more fearful. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.
And to quote another president, Lincoln: “Folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”
The economy is in a descending spiral, and you can be depressed or you can be happy. Either way, the economy is the same but how you feel is in your control. Hope that makes sense. It’s early and I’m sleepy.

Thank you for this. After listening to the outside (CNN, MSNBC, Etc.) media for several months; I began to have a panic attack. After reading this article, I took a deep breathe and said…I had a great year and the next shall be better!!!!
